Pig producer Mansdala Gård in Swedish Österlen had problems with organisms that led to biofilm in water pipes. Swedish Anolytech’s environmentally friendly system for disinfecting water without harmful chemicals solved the problem.
The Carlsson family raises pigs at Mansdala Farm and two smaller farms nearby. Ulrika and Sven-Olof bought the farm in 1994 and live in the house built in 1874. Now, their son Christian and his wife Annette are ready to take over together with brother Olof.
As a result of the farm being at the forefront when it comes to the quality of the piglets they deliver, leading slaughterhouse HKScan named it “Pig Supplier of the Year 2018”.
– It’s great fun to get appreciation for the work we have put into constantly trying to develop the operation and increase the quality of the pigs we deliver, says Ulrika Carlsson.
She is a bit of an inventor jock and is behind the solution with an inverted pull of the pipes for the water nipples in the stall, an idea that other pig breeders have copied. Instead of the piglets’ nipples being last on the line, the sow’s is.
– We realized that the piglets are too weak to suck the nipples clean. Because the sow’s nipple is now last, we avoid the work of having to clean the piglet nipple on an ongoing basis.
Problems with bacteria in water disappeared continuous disinfection instead of point interventions
The farm has sufficient access to water but previously had problems with the level of organisms being too high and that a biofilm was formed in water pipes.
– When we installed Anolytech’s system, we initially had to clean the nipples almost daily. Their environmentally friendly solution was powerful enough to dissolve the biofilm, which then ended up in the nipples. After a week or so, the pipes were cleaned and the problem disappeared. Since then, it has worked perfectly, says Christian Carlsson.
Continuous disinfection instead of point intervention
According to Christian, sustainability today is a natural part of being an agricultural entrepreneur. As a consequence, avoid ing point interventions with harmful chemicals to temporarily reduce the bacterial level feels right.
– It was a relief when we installed Anolytech’s system that continuously produces the hypochlorous acid we need here on the farm. In the same way we have solar cells to produce our own electricity.
Certification builds trustworthiness
As Anolytech started back in 2005, there were many sceptical voices regarding it’s sustainable method for disinfecting water without using harmful chemicals. 16 years later, a commonly increased environmental awareness is paving the way for a game changing shift towards disinfection based on Anolytech’s sustainable solution instead of using traditional chemicals.
AnoDes is used within different areas where fighting unwanted bacteria like Campylobacter, Cyanobacteria, Escherichia coli and Legionella pneumophila is needed. One important reason is that it’s very effective without being harmful to animals and humans.
The fact that Anolytech’s technique has been certified according to leading standards regarding hand and surface disinfection, contributes to the increased demand from clients in new markets and segments.
